Weather Station with MQTT and LoRa
Hardware IoT Weather DIY
A weather station with the capacity to feed data out via MQTT/Wi-Fi, LoRa, or Zigbee (firmware permitting).
Hardware
| Part | Description | I/O | Address |
|---|---|---|---|
| SHT45-AD1F-R2 | Temperature and relative humidity | I²C | 0x44 |
| AS3935 | Lightning sensor | I²C | 0x06 |
| E22-900M30S | LoRa Transceiver (SX1262) | SPI | — |
Lightning Detection
The Gravity Lightning Sensor employs AMS’s AS3935 lightning sensor IC and a Coilcraft MA5532-AE dedicated antenna to detect:
- Lightning distance
- Lightning intensity
- Lightning frequency
Detection range is approximately 40km (radius), both indoors and outdoors. The embedded interference rejection algorithm suppresses false positives from household appliances.
Applications
- Weather enthusiasts measuring local thunderstorm data
- Outdoor climbers needing storm warnings
- Smart wearable devices for weather exposure
- Equipment protection (auto-switch to backup power when lightning detected)
- Photography (trigger camera shutter via interrupt pin)
Transmission Options
The firmware supports multiple transmission methods:
- MQTT over Wi-Fi — Standard IoT messaging
- LoRa — Long-range low-power transmission
- Zigbee — Mesh networking (future addition)
Conclusion
A versatile weather station platform with professional-grade sensing capabilities and flexible connectivity options.
